Risk of disruption due to rain/snow/wind through until the weekend

Met Office LogoLast night’s rain seems to have pushed through without any major issues although a number of coastal/fluvial Flood Alerts (and one Flood Warning) remain in force across north Lancashire and Cumbria.

Through the rest of today the picture is pretty much as per yesterday’s prediction i.e. rather windy with scattered showers of rain, hail, sleet or snow, these mainly affecting Lancashire and Cumbria. Any sleet/snow within the showers is likely to descend to increasingly lower levels as the day progresses with slight accumulations possible at higher levels. Severe weather warnings status

Alan Goodman from the Met Office sent us the following message:

Flood Risk Maps 12 December 2011

I am enclosing today’s Flood Guidance Statement (FGS) which now has Lancashire and Cumbria on Yellow (Low) flood risk on all five days this week with the exception of Wednesday. This reflects an increased risk of flooding due to potential contributions from rivers, the sea and surface water. The commentary in the FGS explains the flood risk further. Cockermouth Flood Action Group received this detailed report on the severe weather warning from the Met Office regional advisor:

Let’s first deal with the winds today, the strongest of which will shortly exit stage east. Gusts of 50-60mph have been recorded, mainly
along the coast and over higher ground, much in line with expectations. Resulting impacts appear to have been relatively minimal.
